British GP: Free Practice #2 - Re-Cap & Times

BRITISH GP - FREE PRACTICE #2 - RE-CAP & TIMES

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas topped the times in the second free practice session ahead of British Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Bottas was just four hundredths of a second faster than team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who was the only driver to set his fastest lap time on the harder “soft” tyre compound. Both drivers set their fastest lap times early in the 90 minute session, before moving to race simulations.

Hamilton was one of a number of drivers still getting to grips with the new, tougher cars in the tricky Silverstone corners. He lost control of his Mercedes as he ran wide on a flying lap. After running over the grass, Hamilton drove over the kerb to rejoin the track, damaging the underside of his car.

The Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth fastest, followed by Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

Verstappen was frustrated towards the end of the session when, whilst on a flying lap, he found himself stuck behind the Williams of Felipe Massa. Massa, on an out lap, didn’t let Verstappen past and the two made contact as the Red Bull found a way through. The incident was investigated by the stewards.

Massa finished the session eighth, just behind Nico Hulkenberg.

Fernando Alonso, who will take a grid penalty for an engine change this weekend, was running fifth early in the session, but moved down the order as other drivers completed times on the super-soft tyres. He finished ninth, ahead of Force India’s Esteban Ocon.

Carlos Sainz was another driver to have an incident learning the Silverstone track in the new generation of F1 car. He locked up and span sideways into the grass early in the session. He was able to continue and returned to the pits. A long stay in the pits limited his running, but he eventually finished the session 11th, ahead of team-mate Daniil Kvyat.

Sergio Perez finished 13th fastest, ahead of Romain Grosjean and Lance Stroll.

Alonso’s team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne finished 16th fastest, followed by Kevin Magnussen who was back in the car after Antonio Giovinazzi featured in the first free practice session.

Jolyon Palmer once again enjoyed limited running, a clutch problem keeping him in the pits for the majority of the session. He finished 18th.

The Sauber duo of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein completed the standings, Ericsson three tenths of a second faster than Wehrlein.
